How to choose a hummingbird feeder
Five criteria decide whether a feeder works. Material and price are not among the first three.
1. Port count and layout
This is the single decision that determines whether your yard hosts one bird or several. Hummingbirds guard food sources, and a four-port ring is easy for one dominant male to defend from a single perch. Spreading ports across a larger structure makes guarding physically impossible, which is why high-port-count designs change a yard so noticeably.
2. Capacity matched to your traffic
Bigger is not better. Nectar ferments, so a 32 oz reservoir in a yard with two birds means you dump most of it every few days. Around 16 to 24 oz suits most suburban yards; go larger only if you are genuinely refilling daily during migration.
3. Cleanability, honestly assessed
The feeder you will keep clean is the one that comes apart without a fight. Narrow bottle necks require a brush and patience; feeders that separate into flat pieces get rinsed weekly because it takes minutes. Mold at the ports is the leading reason birds abandon a yard.
4. Leak resistance
Inverted-bottle feeders leak on hot afternoons because trapped air expands and pushes nectar out. The sticky ring on your patio is physics, not a defect. Designs holding nectar in trays or a bottom reservoir avoid the pressurised air column entirely.
5. Ant and bee defence
A water-filled ant moat is close to a hundred percent effective and requires no chemicals — never use oil or petroleum jelly, which ruins bird feathers. For bees, look for ports where the nectar level sits recessed below the opening so short bee mouthparts cannot reach it while hummingbird tongues can.
The nectar recipe
Four parts water to one part plain white sugar, stirred until dissolved. No dye, no honey, no brown sugar, no artificial sweeteners. Replace every two days above 90°F and every four to five days in mild weather.
