Why most feeders only ever hold one bird

The complaint I hear most often is not that hummingbirds never show up. It is that one shows up, parks itself on the perch, and drives away every other bird that approaches for the rest of the summer. That is normal behaviour: hummingbirds are territorial around a food source, and a feeder with four ports clustered on a single ring is trivially easy for one bird to guard.

So the variable I cared about was not capacity or material. It was whether the geometry of the feeder made guarding impossible. Same nectar recipe — four parts water to one part white sugar — same hook height, same yard, rotated across three weeks each so no feeder got a favourable stretch of weather.

Four of the five behaved the way I expected. The fifth changed what my yard looks like in the evening.

How I tested

Each feeder hung on the same pergola hook in a west-facing yard outside Austin, at the same height, for a minimum of three weeks. I logged peak simultaneous birds twice a day, nectar consumed, and how long nectar stayed clear before it needed changing.

Cleaning was scored by how long a full disassembly, rinse, and reassembly took me with a timer running. Leaking was scored by whether the post underneath was sticky after a 95°F afternoon. Pest resistance was scored by ant intrusions and wasp crowding, with the ant moat filled with plain water only.
