Keeping Ants, Bees, and Wasps Off a Hummingbird Feeder

Ant moats, port geometry, and placement solve almost every pest problem at a nectar feeder — without oils, sprays, or anything that harms the birds.
Never use oil, grease, or spray
The most commonly repeated backyard tip — smear petroleum jelly or cooking oil on the hanger to stop ants — is one of the worst things you can do. Hummingbirds brush against the hanger, oil transfers to their feathers, and oiled feathers lose the insulation and aerodynamics these birds depend on. A bird that cannot thermoregulate at night does not survive it.
Insecticides near a nectar source are equally out. Anything that kills an ant on the feeder is going into the nectar the birds drink.
Ants: a water moat solves it completely
Ants cannot cross standing water. A moat is simply a small cup sitting above the feeder, filled with plain water, that the ants have to traverse to reach the nectar. They will not. This is close to a hundred percent effective and requires no chemicals at all.
Two rules: use plain water, never soapy water or oil, and top it up. Moats evaporate in a couple of days in summer, and a dry moat is just a decoration. Feeders with an integrated moat are worth choosing precisely because refilling it becomes part of the same motion as refilling nectar.
Bees and wasps: geometry beats warfare
Bees reach nectar with short mouthparts, so they can only feed when liquid sits right at the port opening. Hummingbird tongues extend well past the port. Feeders whose ports keep the nectar level recessed below the opening therefore feed birds and starve bees without excluding anything by force.
Port shape matters too. Small flower-shaped openings sized for a hummingbird bill are physically awkward for wasps to work, and the absence of a broad flat landing surface means they cannot settle in comfortably.
If wasps still swarm, the usual cause is leaked nectar on the outside of the feeder. Wipe the exterior every refill; the insects are following the spill, not the reservoir.
Placement adjustments that help
Move the feeder ten to fifteen feet after a wasp problem starts. Insects navigate to a memorised location and often fail to relocate it, while hummingbirds re-find a feeder in the same yard within a day.
Partial afternoon shade lowers the internal temperature, which reduces both fermentation and the pressure that pushes nectar out of bottle-style feeders — and less spill means fewer insects. Keep the feeder well away from garbage bins and ripe fruit, both of which recruit wasps to the area for reasons that have nothing to do with you.
The routine that keeps it clear
Every refill: top up the moat, wipe the exterior, check the ports for pooled nectar. Every week: full disassembly and rinse. That is the entire pest programme, and it works without a single product that could harm a bird.
